Reigning European 400m hurdles champion Sara Slott Petersen continued on the road to defending her title at the Berlin 2018 European Athletics Championships in August when she won her specialist event in 55.48 at the Copenhagen Athletics Ganes, a European Athletics Classic Permit Meeting, on Tuesday (26).
The expected duel between the Dane and two-time world champion Zuzana Hejnova didn’t materialise as the Czech star injured her knee in her last training session before departing for the Danish capital, which left Slott Petersen to race around the Osterbro Stadion almost unchallenged to win by more than a second.
'You must always be happy with a season's best, but I had hoped for a little faster time today. Perhaps it was the wind that cost something, and if Hejnová had been there, I'd probably have been a little quicker,' said Slott Petersen ruefully, who is scheduled to race over the barriers again at the IAAF Diamond League meeting in Lausanne next week.
Swedish discus thrower Simon Pettersson, who threw a personal best of 65.84m a week ago, backed up his recent good form with a winning effort in the fifth round of 63.79m while Latvia’s Lauma Griva took the women’s long jump with 6.53m.

There were wins for British internationals Rabah Yousif in the 400m 45.74 and Bianca Williams in the 100 m in 11.46 while Poland´s Michal Rozmys won a special Wilson Kipketer Tribute 800m race in 1:46.77.
Last year’s European U23 shot put champion Fanny Roos, from Sweden, was respectably close to her recent national record of 18.68m when she reached 18.19m but she had to settle for second place behind Canadian record holder Brittany Crew who sent her implement out to 18.32m. In seventh place, Thea Jensen set a Danish U20 record of 14.78m.
Another Danish U20 record came in a specially staged discus competition with the 1.75kg implement. Casper Jorgensen improved his own record for the third time in four competitions, firstly reaching 59.21m in the fifth round and then 59.25m with his final throw.
