Pascal Martinot-Lagarde and Renelle Lamote have been voted French Athletes of the Year for 2019.
World 110m hurdles bronze medallist Martinot-Lagarde accrued 32.14 percent of the vote ahead of fellow world medallist Quentin Bigot with 20.84 percent.
“This result makes me happy, especially because I have never been voted Athlete of the Year in all these years,” said Martinot-Lagarde. “This vote says that my performances are recognised and that you believe in me.”
On the women’s side, European indoor 800m silver medallist Renelle Lamote topped the voting with 24.94 percent in a close contest against Blandine L’Hirondel (23.60 percent) and Alexandra Tavernier (21.44 percent).
“I am almost quite embarrassed,” said Lamote. “I am voted Athlete of the Year after a season which was very difficult for me. But this pleased me a lot and I am very touched.”
European U23 5000m and 10,000m champion Jimmy Gressier was voted Youngster of the Year on the men’s side with a considerable 46.32 percent of the vote. The gold medal-winning U23 team from the SPAR European Cross Country Championships - which Gressier was very much a part of - also won the Team of the Year accolade.
“We are part of a strong generation and we will need all your support for the next challenges, notably the 2024 Olympics in Paris,” said Gressier.
On the women’s side, European indoor pentathlon bronze medallist Solene Ndama won 20.34 percent of the vote ahead of Hilary Kpatcha (13.42 percent) and Claire Palou (13.32 percent).
“I am very pleased and happy to have won. I think my medal at the European Indoor Championships made a bit of an impression on the public,” she said. “It shows people continue to support me through the highs but also some of the lows I went through in 2019.”
